Wayne Wings Frequently Asked Questions
Travel Soccer Q:What is travel soccer? A: Travel soccer is competitive soccer played against like teams from other communities. The Wayne Wings Youth Soccer Club teams compete with teams from other clubs in the Rochester, NY area through the (Rochester District Youth Soccer League) RDYSL.
Q: How does travel soccer differ from recreation soccer? A: There are three basic levels of soccer: recreational, travel, and premier. Each of these differs in level of play, player, and parent commitment, amount of travel, and cost. Recreational soccer is the least competitive and requires less time and commitment than either travel or premier soccer. Travel Soccer is designed for players who have an interest and the ability to benefit from additional soccer training and to compete at a higher level of play. Because it is competitive, the program requires more time, effort, and commitment from both the player and parents. This is a commitment matched by the Coaches and Board of Directors of the Wayne Wings Soccer Club. From this shared commitment, your child’s development as a soccer player should progress more rapidly than if they played only recreational soccer.
Costs Q: How much does it cost? A: The fees are reviewed and set every summer by the Board for the following season. The 2006-2007 Fees are:
Q: Do we re-use uniforms? A: The club plans to purchase new uniforms every other year, so please plan accordingly. Uniforms must be in an acceptable condition – fits properly; no discoloration; no rips or tears and no autographs. New uniform socks are provided every year. In the off year, parents may purchase uniforms at their own expense. New uniforms for all players will be provided for the 2007 season. Players that are new to the club in any year receive a new uniform as well. The club does NOT recycle uniforms because it is virtually impossible to ensure each child on a team will have a unique number.
Q: Do I need to buy soccer shoes? A: Yes. Soccer shoes/turf shoes provide safe traction on damp grass. Cleats should be molded plastic or rubber. Metal or hard plastic cleats are not permitted. The proper soccer shoe provides an additional measure of safety for your player.
Q: What about shin guards? A: All children MUST have SHIN GUARDS or they will NOT be permitted to play or practice. There are no exceptions.
Q: Will I need athletic glasses? A: It is recommended that your child should have plastic lenses or ‘sport’ high-impact glasses with retaining straps.
Q: Can my child wear jewelry? A: Jewelry is not permitted at practices or games for safety reasons. If Medic Alert or religious necklaces must be worn, they must be taped down to the skin before the practice or games. No exceptions.
Q: What other equipment will I need? A: Players must bring a water bottle (with cold water or Gatorade; not soda or juice) to games and practices. All children should bring a ball of their own to practices.
Q: What size ball does my child need? A: Age 8-12: Size 4. Age 13 and older: Size 5.
Q: How is participation in Tournaments paid for? A: Typically our teams go to 1-3 tournaments per season. The cost for each tournament is divided among the players.
Season Q: What is a typical season? A: This is a year round program and you must be committed to getting your child to the practices and games.
Q: When and where are travel soccer games played? A: Games are typically played on weeknights and generally begin between 6:30 and 7:30 PM. Games are played on fields associated with travels clubs around the Greater Rochester area.
Q: What days will games be on? A: Final outdoor schedules become available from the RDYSL in late April or early May. These schedules are set by RDYSL and all games are originally scheduled for weekday evenings.
Q: How many outdoor games are played? A: Teams typically play 12 league games a year split evenly between your home field and your opponents’ home field. All games are within the greater Rochester area. However, you may participate in tournaments outside the Rochester area which could require an overnight stay. Each team typically participates in three tournaments over the season. The choice of tournaments is at the discretion of the coaching staff.
Q: What about "rain-outs" or cancellations? A: Soccer is an all weather sport. Coaches determine if practice is cancelled. Referees determine if games are cancelled. Games that are stopped at halftime or later are not re-scheduled. In these instances, the score at the time of cancellation stands. Lightning will stop play, but games may be re-started if lightning has not been seen for 20 minutes. Parents, of course, may withdraw their child from play if they are uncomfortable with safety issues. Soccer is traditionally played under fairly poor conditions including rain, cold, snow, and wind so be prepared or plan to wait it out in the car!
Q: Who referees the games? A: All games are officiated by referees certified by the United States Soccer Federation and all referees are required to pass an annual written test for certification.
Tryouts/Teams Q: Do you have to live in the Wayne Central School District to play for Wayne Wings? A: No, the Wayne Wings is open to any player who earns a spot on the team.
Q: How does my child tryout for a team? A: Each age group from U8-U19 conducts an annual tryout for spots on their respective rosters. The dates, times and locations for these are listed on our web site (www.waynewings.com). There is a Try out Registration form that must be mailed in prior to August 1st. This form is available on our website.
Q: How are players selected? A: At least two coaches from our Club will independently evaluate and rank players after observing their performance. At the conclusion of the final try out session, scores will be averaged to determine the overall ranking of participants. This will determine the top 12 for each team. The remainder of the roster will be filled at the head coach’s discretion.
Q: When will I be notified if I made the team? A: We make every effort to notify the players as quickly as possible upon completion of tryouts. We try to notify all players of their status within 2 weeks of the last tryout date.. All players will receive a letter stating whether they made the team or not.
Q: What age group can my child be in? A: The Age Matrix Instructions from RDYSL:
The youngest player allowed on an RDYSL team is U8. There are no exceptions to this rule.
Q: Can a child play in an older age group ("play up")? A: Player may tryout for an older team with the recommendation and consent of the coaching director.
Q: Can a child play in a younger age group ("play down")? A: No.
Q: Can my child play for two clubs at the same time? (Multiple Rostering) A: See RDYSL Multiple Rostering Rule #307
Coaches’ Qualifications Q: What are the coaches’ qualifications? A: Head coaches are trained and licensed by the United States Soccer Federation. All Wayne Wings coaches and assistant coaches are volunteers. They are sanctioned by New York State West and have obtained Risk Management Passes. In addition, it is mandated by our club that all coaches successfully complete First Aid training.
Parent’s Expectations Q: Why should parents attend games? A: The club does not provide medical services. A basic first aid kit is provided to each team for routine scrapes and scratches. Coaching and other services are provided by volunteers, not licensed medical providers. In case of a medical event, our volunteers are instructed to call 911 to ensure trained medical providers care for your player.
Q: Is the club insured? A: The New York State West Youth Soccer Association (NYSWYSA) provides limited secondary insurance coverage for registered players.
Q: What can I do about bad referee calls? A: DO NOTHING. Be a good sport. Set an example for the children. Many of the referees, especially for the younger age groups are new, still learning the ropes and are doing their best. NO referee ever comes to a game to blow a call or cause a specific team to win or lose. Spectators are encouraged to watch the games but are NOT permitted to "participate" by making negative comments to anyone at any time. This is considered verbal abuse and will not be tolerated. Such activity will result in ejection of the offender and/or forfeit of the game as well as cash fines that must be paid by the player or team or both.
Q: What are cash fines? A: Certain inappropriate player, coach and fan behavior carries heavy cash fines. The simplest way to avoid fines is to conduct yourself in a sportsmanlike manner. The team/coach are expected to reimburse the club for any such fine. Failure to do so will impact their ability to participate as a Wayne Wings team in future seasons.
Q: How can I appropriately cheer on the team? A: Positive comments (e.g. great play, good hustle, etc.) are terrific motivators for players. Please refrain from providing tactical directions to players. It distracts the players, and you may be giving them directions that conflict with what the coach wants them to do. Ultimately the head coach is responsible for the actions of the players and the team’s fans. The head coach has the authority to ask any overheated fan to leave the area. Failure to comply with the coach’s request could result in the fan’s player receiving reduced playing time or even suspension from the team.
Q: Where can I sit during games? A: RDYSL rules require that the team and its associated parents/fans be on one side of the field, while the opposing team and their parents/fans are on the opposite side. This rule is designed to keep the opposing parents separated. During the game, please do not sit right next to your player’s team. And, please do not call him/her over to you during the game or during play stoppage. This distracts the players and makes it difficult for the coach to work with the team. Neither parents nor coaches can be stationed around the field to coach their players.
Q: Am I expected to do anything? A: Every family is required to volunteer service to the Club as a part of their obligation as members. Typically this service involves working one 4 hour block during the annual Wayne Wings Indoor Tournament, or by serving as a Coach, Assistant Coach, Team Manager, Committee Member or Board Member. If you are unable to volunteer, you can satisfy this obligation by paying a $75.00 buyout fee. Failure to agree to volunteer will result in your registration not being accepted.
Q: What are the parent’s expectations? A: Parental participation is an important part of the team and club’s success. The following are examples of the types of endeavors to which parents should be willing to commit their support:
Player’s Expectations Q: What are the player’s expectations? A: Practices / Games:
